Who likes ads? Everyone hates ads! They’re annoying, can be creepy, and distract you from doing whatever you are trying to do.

Here are some numbers to consider before advertising online for you business (get in touch if you would like to see the sources).

- From 2018 to 2019, the total number of devices around the world with ad blockers rose from 142 million to upwards of 615 million.

- 45% percent of people report “I don’t notice online ads anymore, even if I don’t block them.”

- 96% of consumers don’t trust ads.

Consumers aren’t the only ones suffering; brands are victims too. They are forced to keep throwing money into the advertising trying to reach a ton of people, but end up infuriating many of them while converting only a tiny fraction. In the short-term, this drives some sales. But in the long-term, this negatively impacts their brand by annoying more and more people.

So no advertising then? Well, not necessarily. We still want to use the opportunities big monopolistic tech companies may provide, we just need to be careful and do it smartly.

What can small businesses do to tell people about themselves?

- Google Ads - specifically text ads that are only shown when someone searches for what you offer.

- Facebook Ads - I rarely recommend them but sometimes they may work too, only used in specific way though. This depends on what exactly you offer.

- Facebook Groups - excellent way to connect with locals and people interested in what you do or finding networking opportunities.

- Website SEO - there are so many websites out there these days, without getting too technical, we just need to make sure people who visit your site aren't going to immediately leave because it is too complicated, not loading, bad quality or looks funny.

- Photography - there is no excuse for having bad photos these days. Most new phones take images better than cameras from as little as 10 years ago. Ask me to take pictures for you or let me help you find some images that will work for your product or service - there are options available!

- Analytics - we all like simple to read graphs showing your progress. I'm quite good at creating them!
